Owner Dave Marcis purchased Camp 28 along with his wife, Helen, in 2001, after retiring from a long and remarkable career racing in the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit (currently known as NASCAR Sprint Cup). As a Wisconsin native born nearby in Wausau, WI, Mr. Marcis has enjoyed lifelong connections as a hunter, outdoorsman, and landowner in the area.
Thanks to his distinctive flair and natural driving instincts, Dave Marcis’ established a record that stands out among the racing greats of the 1970s, 80s, 90s, and beyond. As one of the last in the era of independent owner-drivers, his tenacity and dedication was apparent on the track and in the pits. Even without big-name factory sponsorships, he put the pedal to the metal race after race, bringing home five wins and racking up an astounding 883 runs over 35 years. He is also known for driving in signature wingtip dress shoes after discovering the leather soles were more resistant to the heat buildup in the driver’s seat that often melted other drivers’ rubber-sole boots. That kind of outside-the-box thinking helped propel him and his independent team to an accomplished career on the racetrack. As a determined man who is always willing to get his hands dirty, he’s finding plenty to do retirement. He still works on cars and lives with his wife in Asheville, North Carolina.
